As you play out the scenarios in Songs of Conquest , you must level up your wielders. This page of the guide explains how to level up heroes, how to gain skills and powers, and what the reasons for imposing a level cap on heroes might be.
Leveling up
- Each subordinate wielder has their own level of experience and you have to level them up separately. This means their progress is often uneven - don't focus on developing just 1 hero. Having a few well-developed wielders will make it easier for you to defend various points on the map or improve its exploration.
- A level increase of 1 takes place after collecting the required amount of XP (you can view this by hovering over the level number under the hero's portrait) or after reaching a unique object on the map that guarantees free level up on the spot.
Skills and powers
- Each time you advance to a higher level, you can choose 1 of 3 skills for your wielder. It can be a completely new skill or an upgrade of an existing skill (e.g. improving the strength of melee attacks by 10% or increasing a given essence by 2 points).
- The choice of skills should depend primarily on the class and direction of the character's progression (e.g. developing magic, increasing the effectiveness of ranged attacks). Regardless of the wielder's class, be sure to choose the next levels of the Command skill (example in the picture). Each level of it will add another slot for units. This will enable you to have more troops under control, as there is a limit to how many units 1 slot can hold (e.g. a maximum of 20 archers).
- We also recommend choosing skills with passive bonuses unrelated to combat from time to time. These can include, for example, gaining additional experience or receiving free gold or free resources every round. This is especially advisable if you suffer from their deficiency.
- At level 8, you can unlock a new power for a particular wielder for the first time. They are much stronger than skills. Choose from the list the power that best suits the class and "use" of a given wielder (e.g. further exploration of the map, defense of cities).
- You will gain access to one more power every 8 levels, so at levels 16, 24, and so on.
Level cap
- Depending on the map and game mode, you can level up your heroes without any obstacles, or you will encounter a limit on the maximum experience level for a given scenario. You will learn about the cap when you advance to the last allowed level. The game also displays this information when you hover your cursor over the level number under the portrait.
- The cap persists until the end of a given scenario. If it is a story campaign, the game may set a new higher limit after starting its next mission. This will enable you to resume developing a wielder who has moved on to a new scenario.
- Once you reach the cap, avoid doing unique activities that guarantee XP, such as visiting locations that grant bonus XP only 1 time or attacking enemies. Strive as much as possible to enable the other wielders to advance and also approach the level cap for the mission.
