Humankind is a 4X turn-based strategy, which is an answer to the bestselling Sid Meier's Civilization series. The game was developed by Amplitude, a studio specializing in this genre, known for such titles as Endless Legend and Endless Space series, and it was published by SEGA.

Mechanics

In Humankind, like in the Civilization series, we take control over an entire country, which we lead to dominate the others. However, we start the game not by choosing a specific nation, but by creating our own leader or leaderess. Like in RPG, it allows us to decide not only on the appearance but also on the personality of the character. Then there is nothing left for us but to move on to the actual gameplay.

Initially, we command a small tribe of nomads, whose efforts are focused on gathering food. After a few turns we get the opportunity to adapt a specific cultural pattern, which from now on will be represented by our subordinates. It is worth remembering that nothing stands in the way of moving from era to era - and thus with the development of our country - to change the patterns freely. Besides, we are encouraged to do so by various bonuses, as well as special buildings and units, which are available only to specific cultures.

If we want our country to develop, we must found new cities; for this purpose, we conquer entire regions, creating outposts, which can then be improved to the metropolis level. We expand them by building specialized districts responsible for food production, science, the satisfaction of residents and finally for generating income to our treasury. In addition, we can create various structures within the cities, which improve their statistics. The icing on the cake are the wonders of the world, providing various bonuses and being a tangible proof of our prestige and leadership skills.

In addition, it is important to establish a variety of rules to govern the lives of our people. The list of them is determined by complex aspects of the state's functioning - from the level of technological development, through economy and science, to religion.

And we should not forget that we are not alone on the map. Leaders of other nations differ in their ideas about the development of their countries, attitude to their neighbors or personality traits. Nothing stands in the way to enter into alliances with them, or even establish economic or scientific cooperation, jointly pursuing specific objectives. An important role is also played by the crisis mechanic, which allows you to put pressure on other nations when they find themselves in difficult situations. Crisis mechanics can be a good way to gain certain benefits without spilling blood, as well as a great excuse to declare war.

Sooner or later we have to meet with the enemy forces on the battlefield. Battles, like the rest of the gameplay, take place in turn-based mode. We send small armies, made up of several units, to skirmishes, which take place in special areas on the world map. The key to success is appropriate positioning of our units, because the skillful use of terrain provides them with various bonuses to statistics.

We can achieve victory by using methods not seen in Civilization series. Apart from the classic point victory, there is an option to defeat the opponents militarily or send a space mission. It is also possible to triumph by vassalizing all rivals, completing the technology tree or destroying life on the entire planet. In order to achieve the latter we can use nuclear weapons, which are much more powerful than the missiles known from the Civilization series.
